THE Fiji Young Men’s Christian Association Hapkido Association has begun a new chapter for Fiji, as they look to trial the martial arts concept Kung Fu Wushu for the first time in Fiji’s history.

“We have been approached by the Oceania Kung Fu Wushu Federation (OKFWF) to try out the discipline, and we are very much looking forward to it,” said Fiji YMCA Hapkido secretary Ioane Naisara.

The Wushu discipline of Sanda is a full-contact sport, which includes kicking, boxing, wrestling and grappling techniques.

“Some of the skill involved is very similar to that we use in Hapkido and we will be looking forward to challenge ourselves with this new method.”

The federation is also pushing for the sport’s inclusion in the 2021 mini Pacific Games.

“It will be an interesting time for our athletes and they are looking forward to jumping right into it.

“We hope as it progresses more people will be coming aboard just to get a taste of the different martial arts there are and disciplines involved.”
