THE Fijian Government has made significant strides in the reduction of poverty over the last several decades.

This was an observation by the United Nations Development Programme resident representative Vineet Bhatia.

He was part of the national poverty forum at Novotel Hotel in Lami this morning.

“We are really pleased and happy to support the Fijian Government in addressing poverty,” Mr Bhatia said.

“Fiji has signed up to the UN SDGs and one of the number one goal in this is fighting poverty.”

“To understand the factors leading to poverty we must understand what poverty is and in Fiji it has been measured by household income.”

The two day forum was an initiative by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa aimed to bring together Government agencies and its development partners.

Participants at the forum discussed the issues pertaining to poverty in Fiji and ways to address them.
