THE former media liaison officer at the Ministry of Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Sainiana Waqainabete, was acquitted of corruption-related charges by the Suva Magistrate Court this afternoon.
Ms Waqainabete was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with nine counts of obtaining a financial advantage by deception.
This involved obtaining a financial advantage from several private contractors of then-Public Works Department (PWD) and the ministry by falsely stating that the line Minster then, Timoci Natuva, had been requesting sponsorship and financial assistance from them in 2012.
In delivering her judgement, Magistrate Waleen George said evidence obtained from the former Minister for Works, Transport and Utilities, Mr Natuva, stated that he, in fact, encouraged Ms Waqainabete to source funds from private contractors and other sources outside of the ministry to fund work-related events.
