SINGLE parent Reshmi Nair decided to take up cooking and sewing classes because she was desperate to find work and support her son.
The 40-year-old said she was a housewife for 17 years and found life difficult when her marriage broke down.
Ms Nair was one of 45 women who were at the Makoi Women’s Vocational Centre open day in Nasinu yesterday.
“When I was with my husband, he did not let me work for the past 17 years,” she shared.
“When we got separated, I was left on my own with my son and without any financial support.
“I tried looking for a job and despite my efforts, I could not find any. I did not have any qualifications either.”
She added she came to know about the centre through Facebook.
“I am doing the sewing course now and happy to graduate next week. I have previously graduated from the cooking and pastry course.”
She said she was keen on finding employment and encouraged other women to take advantage of the support offered through the centre.
