SINCE the Fijian economy is in transition now and with a strong emphasis on the non-agricuture sector in this process, there needs to be a change in the sector.

This was highlighted by Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy during a public lecture on the agriculture sector held at the Fiji National University’s College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry today.

Dr Reddy said a few new roles had been included into the agriculture sector which included contributing to our peoples’ nutritional and health requirements, providing positive returns to the owners of agricultural resources, and contributing to government revenue base via agricultural activity and sales to name a few.

He said: “We must clear the misconception that agriculture was a declining sector”.

“Despite a decline in the sugarcane sector, the overall agricultural output has substantially increased. For example, in 1995, agricultural output stood at $372m which steadily rose to $500.8m in 2016.”
