Rakiraki too strong

Giant-killers Rakiraki created a major upset defeating Nadi 4-3 via a penalty shootout to lift the Digicel/Rams Cleaning Services-sponsored Fiji Primary Schools Football Association (FPSFA) 45th Inter-District Championship title at Garvey Park in Tavua.

The two teams were locked 1-all at the end of extra time forcing the final to be decided on penalties.

Rakiraki walked away with $800 prizemoney while Nadi settled for $400. In the semi-finals, Nadi beat neighbour Lautoka 1-0.

Aminiasi Nava rifled the ball to the back of the net in the ninth minute while surprise package Rakiraki bundled out the defending champions Rewa 2-0. Isimeli Eparama scored a goal in each half for the “Junior Maroons”.

FPSFA president Dina Mani Mudaliar praised major sponsor Digicel and co-sponsor Rams Cleaning Services for coming on board to support their event. Mudaliar said without the sponsors the tournament would not have been possible.

“We would also like to thank the Ministry of Education for giving us the green light to host the three day event,” he said.

“This football IDC is the first national sporting event for the primary schools in the country this year.

“There were 20 teams which participated with the furthest being from Taveuni.”

In the quarter-finals, Nadi defeated Navua 3-0, Nadroga went down to Lautoka 0-2, Rewa beat Seaqaqa 2-1 while Rakiraki edged Nasinu 1-0.Rewa and Lautoka each received $150 for their efforts.
