Prof Prasad: Government violated its election promise

NATIONAL Federation Party (NFP) leader Professor Biman Prasad claims the FijiFirst Government has “violated its election promise and betrayed sugarcane growers” by “drastically slashing” cane planting and weedicide grants to accumulate money for the Sugar Stabilisation Fund.

In a statement this week, Prof Prasad claimed $23.3 million has been slashed from the sugarcane planting, weedicide and repair of cane access road grants in the 2019-2020 National Budget, compared with the amounts allocated in the 2018-2019 budget.

“While the overall sugar budget shows an increase this year — due to the allocation of $30 million for Sugar Stabilisation Fund to guarantee the price of $85 for three years as announced in last year’s budget — the actual allocations to make the industry productive has been significantly reduced,” he claimed.
