Prasad: Fake news

DESPERATE people are using race and religion to drive Fijians of Indian descent voters into the arms of the FijiFirst party, claims National Federation Party (NFP) leader Professor Biman Prasad.
Prof Prasad made the comment in response to what he termed as “fake news” that has been circulating on social media alleging that the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) would abolish Diwali as a national holiday if elected into government.
“We have asked SODELPA to tell the people if this is true. SODELPA has assured us that this is a lie,” he said. “This is disgusting gutter-level politics — but nothing new in this campaign.”
Prof Prasad said Diwali and the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday became holidays in 1974.
“These holidays have never been abolished by any government. Not even the military government after the 1987 coup. “It is time to end all this. It is time to vote out this tired, failed government and its fake news supporters,” he claimed.
SODELPA has also confirmed that it would not scrap the Diwali public holiday and that the speculations were not true.
