Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the Opposition thinks it is their job to “oppose the Government relentlessly”.

While addressing the Macuata Provincial Council meeting at Vunivutu Village, Labasa on Wednesday, he said the Opposition set themselves against the 2022-2023 budget instead of offering any credible alternative policies.

The PM said after the announcement of the budget, the Opposition has redoubled “their selfish pursuit of power”.

Mr Bainimarama said the Opposition needed a guiding political and economic philosophy to allow them to develop alternatives.

“In a tacit admission of their total inability to make policy or lead a country, they blindly oppose everything the Government does,” he said.

“Apparently they think the job of Opposition is to oppose the Government relentlessly.

“But their role is to scrutinise and offer criticism that is constructive and to oppose when that fails. “To do that, an Opposition normally needs to offer alternatives.”

Mr Bainimarama said his Government never worked against any Fijian.

“We serve everyone equally to the beat of our ability and we build up communities everywhere because we serve all Fijians equally.

“We do not undermine our economy. We take it from strength to strength and we do not create challenges as my opponents seek to do.

“We work to solve the very real issues that face Fiji so that we can secure a future that we can be proud of for our children and grandchildren.”
