Marriott Fiji International Resorts currently has a five and a half acre farm at the Denarau Golf & Racket Club specifically dedicated to organic farming.

Speaking during the group’s Global Customer Appreciation Week (GCAW) cocktail function at the Paradiso Restaurant in Suva, Marriott International Pacific Islands vice president Neeraj Chadha said the farm has been there for quite a while but at a smaller scale.

“During pandemic a lot of our associates were very keen to continue to come and work and do something and many of them had some brilliant farming skills so they started to make a little bit more, a little bit more and then we sort of gave some employment as a result of that and then started to grow some fruits and vegetables,” Mr Chadha said.

He said they were expecting about 12,000 kilograms of fruits and vegetable produce a month from next month or so. He said the aim of the farm initiative was a certification in organic farming.

“Once we achieve that, we’ll share that toolkit with many of our industry partners so collectively as an industry, we don’t want to keep this as a secret.

“So as an industry, we can go out there and do our little bit and together with the Ministry of Agriculture hopefully bring in some farmers there and show them that you can grow certain other items that we generally import from overseas. “And if they buy into it, we come on the other side of the food chain and guarantee purchase.”

Mr Chadha said the pandemic was spent thinking about sustainability and this organic farming initiative was a result thereof.
