Open heart surgery services at the Lautoka Hospital are expected to begin this month.

A spokesperson from Aspen Medical has confirmed equipment for the lifesaving surgery has been installed at the hospital.

“The recent surge in COVID-19 and influenza in Australia and New Zealand has impacted our ability to install and commission the new equipment as originally planned,” the spokesperson said.

“However, the equipment for open heart surgery is now installed at Lautoka Hospital in preparation for the first surgery in August.

“Patients are already undergoing their initial examinations.”

The spokesperson was responding to queries from this newspaper on the recent statements made by National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad.

While highlighting issues facing the health system in the country, Prof Prasad queried earlier statements by Government that surgeries performed at Lautoka Hospital would begin in early May.

Aspen Medical is a subsidiary of Health Care (Fiji) Pte Ltd.

The company has been contracted to upgrade the management, healthcare infrastructure and delivery of health services at the Lautoka and Ba hospitals.
