One venue for IDC

THE Fiji Football Association has confirmed the 2017 Courts Inter District Championship will be played at one venue.

There was a lot of cry from Vanua Levu fans after the semi-finals and final were shifted to Viti Levu despite Labasa reaching the semi-finals as the top team from the group stage.

The annual IDC is scheduled to be played at Churchill Park in Lautoka from October 10-15.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said 90-minute matches would be played in both the premier and senior divisions during the IDC.

“The IDC will start on the Fiji Day public holiday which falls on Tuesday October 10,” he said.

“The tournament will finish off on the Sunday. There will a total break on the Friday of the week. It will be one venue and both the premier and senior teams will play 90 minutes football.

“Going forward to next year, we are looking at splitting the pools in two different venues.”

Close to 6000 fans turned up for the Labasa-Rewa semi-final clash at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on Friday while the attendance at Churchill Park yesterday was approximately 5500.

Yusuf was happy with the attendance during the semi-finals in Nausori and Lautoka.

“Yusuf said their policy of bringing the game to the respective fans was successful.

“He said the need was to take the game to the people. The people have responded and we were very happy with the turnout in Nausori. The Rewa and Labasa fans turned up in big numbers. In the second semi-final, the Nadi and Lautoka fans were also present in numbers.

“Hopefully the trend will continue into the final. We are taking the games to the good grounds and good conditions where the players can display their skills.

“The fans want to see the capability of the players so they can enjoy good football.”
