Man sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for burning down family home

A 34-year-old man who burnt down his family home in a drunken rage in May was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by the High Court in Suva.

The matter was called before High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar.

Sairusi Vuasivo was charged with one count of arson for willfully and unlawfully setting fire to the dwelling house where he and his family lived at Naitata, Navua, on May 8, after returning from a drinking party.

His defacto partner and their two children were also in the house at the time of the incident.

Justice Goundar said while the accused pleaded guilty and saved the court’s time, this was a case of domestic violence.

Vuasivo was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
