THE only thing the people of Newtown in Nasinu want is for the Government to consider giving the land they live on to be rightfully theirs. Josua Rabonu, a resident in Newtown, said during a Unity Fiji pocket meeting on Thursday night that they had been living in Newtown since 1952.
Mr Rabonu said they had been paying lease to the Government ever since.
He said they were worried about what the future held for their children if they continued leasing.
“We have been living here for years now and that’s all we want, we want this land to be ours,” he said.
He said the land belonged to the Government.
“We don’t want our children to suffer in the near future.”
The party, in its manifesto stated that it would allow lease beyond 50 years with appropriate conditions to compensate for the longer use of assets.
It will also promote the continuity of leases by introducing goodwill payments at the expiry of the land leases.
