FORMER Flying Fijians hooker Vereniki Sauturaga was among farmers recognised by the Agriculture Ministry for their hard work.

After being dropped from the Flying Fijians side in 2010, Mr Sauturaga said he ventured into farming.

“Since I have become a Seventh-day Adventist, the thought of farming came into place which was not an easy thought at first,” he said.

He said he was not expecting any sort of award, but was grateful to the ministry for recognising his efforts.

“I am a servant of the Lord therefore I plant according to his will and I am always happy when I am at my farm.”

Awards were handed out yesterday to hardworking crop and livestock farmers around the country who have surpassed certain land management benchmarks set by the Agriculture Ministry.

Agriculture Assistant Minister Jale Sigarara said these 17 awards were given as an acknowledgement of their hard work and sacrifices.

“The 17 awards that will be presented represent crop and livestock commodities that have contributed to Fiji’s export market and food security,” he said.

“They have showcased the importance of sustainable land management to boost productivity and utilising recycled materials to provide nutritious food to their families.”
