MILIKA Wainibu, 87, one of the oldest attendees at an elderly abuse awareness day event yesterday, says she is thankful to Government for supporting her and for highlighting an issue that is not discussed often enough.

Originally from Qarani, Gau, Ms Wainibu has been living on her own for the past seven years, supported by the Government through the Social Welfare pension scheme.

She said she was also thankful to Narere HART residents for always lending a helping hand when she needed it. “I am also thankful to God for the gift of life.

My husband has passed on and my children have gotten married and now have their own families to look after but I am happy.”

Ms Wainibu also acknowledged the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation for including her in yesterday’s celebrations.

“I made an effort to come today and then I was asked to go up and cut the cake so it has been a really good day to come out and meet other elderly people.”
