THE culture of caring for the elderly in Fiji is starting to fade, says Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa.

Government, she said would start upgrade and renovation works within the three state homes around  the country to brace for the growth in aging population.

She said around 200 elderly people are under the three state homes.

“I don’t know what the reason maybe but that culture of caring for our old aged people is starting to fade away. Sometimes when I visit these state homes I can see the loneliness in them and the smiles on their faces when they see visitors,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said.
