THE two new contractors that are now carrying out road works between 9 Miles and the Rewa Bridge in Nausori are Higgins Fiji and Dayals Quarries.

This was confirmed by Fiji Roads Authority Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Moore.

Mr Moore clarified this after they had earlier terminated China Railway First Group’s contract because they didn’t believe the contractor was making sufficient progress.

He adds that in spite of many efforts to assist there was no progress and they took a drastic step because it was necessary.

He said it was not a wholesale ban on China Railway Group, it was only for that one project for the works between 9 Miles and the Rewa Bridge.

Mr Moore stressed that their goal was to finish works by the middle of next year and have it open by June.

He said they were on track to achieve that and there would be no additional costs to their budget compared with what it would have been if China Railway had continued with the work.

“We are doing everything we can do to make sure the workers that were on the ground are not disadvantaged.

“The new contractors have employed 11 of the original staff that were working with China Railway and there are discussions to employ more of them,” said Mr Moore.
