FIJI’S Ministry of Health and Medical Services has ruled out influenza as the cause of death of two US citizens who died while holidaying in the country.
And the ministry has also assured that at this stage, it did not believe there is any risk to members of the public.
It has been established at this stage that US couple David Paul, 37, and his wife Michelle Calanog Paul, 35, had arrived in Fiji on Wednesday, May 22.
The ministry stated that investigations into the cause of their deaths were ongoing.
“It would be premature to speculate further on the cause of death until the investigation is complete,” the ministry stated.
“Monitoring of the small number of staff and health workers who came into close contact with the deceased couple was conducted, and as a precaution remains ongoing.”
The ministry is coordinating with the US Embassy in Fiji and working closely with the Fiji Police Force’s forensics department, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to determine the cause of death, with those organisations providing technical support.
