Canada 7s: Fiji beats New Zealand; faces SA in Cup semis

THE Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team will play South Africa for a place in the final of the Vancouver 7s in Canada.

This after Fiji defeated New Zealand 22-21 in the Cup quarter-final this morning.

Down 14-12 at the break, Fiji had to rely on a last gasp effort from speedster Alosio Naduva to secure a spot in the last four.

New Zealand scored early through Sam Dickson but Fiji replied through tries to Joshua Vakurunabili and Aminiasi Tuimaba to take a 12-7 lead.

Tim Mickelson added to New Zealand’s’ score as they led 14-12 at the break.

New Zealand applied early pressure in the second spell but Fiji’s defence held for a solid three minutes as Tuimabasa added second to put Fiji ahead 17-14.

Vilimoni Koroi touched down to put New Zealand back in front 21-17.

Naduva proved to be the hero scoring with the last play of the match.

Fiji will now play South Africa in the semi-finals at 10.08am while the second semi-final will be between USA and France at 10.30am.
