A FARMER who pleaded guilty to a count each of aggravated burglary and theft has been sentenced to 16 months imprisonment by the Tailevu Magistrates Court.
The court heard that Tevita Ramana, 43, entered a shop in Korovou Town, Tailevu, sometime in February 2016 and stole $1000 cash and assorted items to the total value of $1156.85.
While sentencing Ramana, Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne said in recent months, there had been an increase in the number of property-related offences in the country.
He said with the prevalence of aggravated burglaries in society, a sentencing court had to consider harsher sentences to offenders to protect the public and their properties irrespective of age or other mitigating factors.
