THE Festival of Lights marks the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil.

This was the message of the Commissioner of Police Sitiveni Qiliho during the Diwali celebrations at the Police Headquarters this morning.

Mr Qiliho said as police officers they need to love their work as servants of the people and respect those they serve.

He adds that it is unfortunate they have had reports against some of their own that have abused their authority and powers and have taken the law into their own hands.

He urged all police officers to reflect on the meaning of the Festival of Lights by ensuring good triumphs over evil during the execution of their duties.

Mr Qiliho said while it is a busy period for the institution going into election period, the Diwali celebrations should also be used as a time of personal reflection.

“As our Hindu brothers and sisters mark Diwali as a new beginning, all officers should reflect on the way they have been conducting their duties and whether or not it has been positive or detrimental to upholding the integrity of the policing profession and take steps to change for the good of our institution,” he said.
