OFFICIALS of the 17 zone meets leading up to the Coca-Cola Games have had a burden taken off their shoulders for the next five years.

In the five-year sponsorship deal announced yesterday, Coca-Cola Amatil Fiji will take care of basic administrative costs for the zone competition, a first of its kind in the history of the national competition.

Company marketing manager Lawrence Tikaram said that this included uniforms for the officials.

“The teachers work hard. You see them coming at the finals with colourful outfits, which comes at a cost. And these officials either fork out from their own pockets or struggle and look for sponsors. So from this year, we thought to make it easy for them,” Tikaram said.

He added that the five-year deal worth more than $1million would mostly focus on the general costs for running the games.

The games will be played from April 5-7.

Ratu Kadavulevu School will defend the boy’s title while Adi Cakobau School will defend the girl’s title.

More than 3000 athletes will take part in the three-day competition.
