FIJI Airways Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber is bracing for another titanic challenge as he prepares to lead the national side for the 2018/2019 HSBC World Sevens Series.
The former Wales 7s rep has been travelling throughout the country for the past months scouting for new players. He also spent most of his time monitoring the national training squad in their off-season training. Baber said the new season would bring new challenges for him and his troops.
“The new 7s season will have challenges for me,” Baber said.
“In every challenge I will look at how can I push myself, how can I lead the team.
“I have to show the discipline necessary for them to follow and the right attitude to win the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and allow them the space and the time to show exactly how they can play.”
He said their five tournament wins last season would inspire the side to lift its performance to win the series. “If we win five tournaments this year, we have to make sure to win the series.
“We missed some big tournaments last year and we have learned our mistakes.
“International sports is like that. If you don’t learn these things quickly, then you will die very quickly.
“For us as a team, we have to take that and move on. “Nothing is stopping us from doing better.”
Baber said the competition for selection into the the final team from the players in camp had been intense. He said the players had been working on their upper body strength and had started with their running in the past two weeks.
“The competition is intense and that is exactly what we want. We want healthy players.
“We have done all the work during the offseason and progressed through the game.
“We are putting them on pre-season and fight for a position.
“It takes a while to build a team because we have lost a few a who have been here.
“It is really about solidifying this team and finding the consistency as a group and we have some real challenges and test along the way.”
Meanwhile, Baber and his troop will be first tested at the coming Oceania 7s at the ANZ Stadium in Suva this month before the side leaves for the Dubai 7s on November 30 to December 1.
