MEMBERS of the ratepayer and business community in Lautoka were today briefed about the Wolbachia project initiated by the World Mosquito Program in Fiji.

Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association Narayan Reddy said this was a good initiative for the city as there had been a number of dengue cases recorded.

World Mosquito Program in Fiji coordinator Aminiasi Tavui said the consultations were to inform members of the public about the program.

“We’re talking to stakeholders, business houses and local communities to get them on the same page on what we do because releasing mosquitoes is not an everyday thing,” he said.

“We want people to be comfortable with the method.”

A similar meeting is planned for Nadi this afternoon.
