BUS companies should not be charging students in school uniforms adult fares, says Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He made this statement after concerns were raised via the 2019-2020 national budget forum on bus drivers taking adult fares from students.

According to a concerned student attending Technical College of Fiji campus in Nausori that bus drivers would tap their bus cards twice on the e-ticketing machine in order to take adult bus fares.

In response, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum advised that any students facing such difficulties with bus drivers should lodge their complaints with the customer care consultant on toll free number 155.

“Bus companies should not be charging you or any other student who in school uniforms adult fares, that is making you tap the card twice,” he said.

“You can also travel on student fares on Saturdays from 5am to 7pm provided you are in school uniforms and have Saturday classes.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum has advised students to report the matter to the authorities if they come across one.

“This complaint will then be reported to the relevant authorities for their action against the bus companies.”
