FIJI 7s coach Gareth Baber is optimistic of winning the 2018-2019 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series title with only four tournaments remaining.

Fiji remains in third position after the completion of the Canada 7s on Monday which was the sixth stop in the series.

The side has 101 points and trails second placed New Zealand with 106 points and frontrunner United States of America with 113 points. Baber said there was always a chance to finish at the top at the end of the season.

“Mathematically it is possible,” Baber said. “I think we made some good by jumping New Zealand and United States in Vancouver.

“It would have been better if we had won the tournament, but we came up against a good South African side which had a bit of form as well.”

Fiji and New Zealand have won two tournaments each, however USA with one win and four final appearances is in the box seat. Baber said things could change in the space of four tournaments.

“USA has been remarkable this season and they deserved that win in Las Vegas We were happy to get over them last weekend, but I’m sure that we will be in a battle again.

“For us as group of players with a program, we want to finish at the top. “Last year we won five tournaments and now we have won two. If we can get three of those four done, then we are not far off being in that position.” The Hong Kong 7s is next in the series and will be played from April 6-7 followed by the Singapore 7s from April 13-14.
