A TOTAL of 5157 people are recipients of Government’s Disability Allowance Program implemented by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

While explaining Government’s services for persons living with disabilities in Fiji, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa said having a strong legal framework was key to ensuring services were offered to the disabled community.

“In order to create better access to services, we have in place the Government-funded free bus fare program for persons living with disabilities,” she said.

“As per my ministry’s strategic priority of social inclusion and empowerment, we are continuing to strengthen data gathering for baseline studies and analysis of the needs of people with disabilities and we are maintaining the national disability database.

“To date, there are 5157 recipients of this allowance.

“The recipients’ families are now also assisted with funeral benefits and life insurance claims just like any other social protection recipient.”

She said for the first time ever an allocation of $100,000 was made towards the economic empowerment of people with disabilities program which was specifically for Fijians living with disabilities to engage in entrepreneurial activities using their skills and business sense to sustain them.

“The Fijian Government has identified that access to services for all Fijians must be made equal and on equitable grounds. For this, Government has allocated $500,000 for making access to buildings a reality for people with mobility restrictions.”
