THE Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has 2311 inmates within its 15 correctional institutions around the country.

This was revealed by FCS director of rehabilitation Senior Superintendent (SS) Salote Panapasa during the Lomaiviti Yellow Ribbon program symposium held at the Studio Six Apartments in Suva yesterday.

SS Panapasa said the FCS was working hard to decrease these numbers.

“From the 15 corrections institutions, we have a prison capacity of 1944, but as of today (yesterday) we have 2311 and this is why we need this kind of symposium in order to reduce the recidivism rates,” she said.

She said there were programs in place to facilitate the growing number of inmates within corrections institutions.

“We also have programs in place to ensure that the number of prisoners within the prisons are minimised,” she said.

SS Panapasa said of the total number of inmates, 44 per cent were youths.

“Out of the total number of inmates, 1786 are convicted while 525 are in remand. “The current number of women (inmates) stands at 101 while the men make up 2210,” she said.
