2019/2020 National Budget: No more Styrofoam containers by 2021
7 June, 2019, 9:53 pm
STYROFOAM containers used mostly for food takeaways will be phased out in Fiji by January 1, 2021.
This was announced by the island nation’s Attorney General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while delivering the 2019-2020 National Budget in Parliament this hour.
“Styrofoam containers, also composed of fossil fuels, are just as bad, taking up to 1000 years to decompose,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“We will be carrying out a nationwide consultation and awareness campaign to give ample notice to restaurants, coffee shops and grocery and convenience stores to prepare them for the transition.”
