2019/2020 National Budget: Major upgrades planned for health infrastructure

THE Health and Medical Services Ministry has plans to undertake major upgrades and refurbishment at a number of its hospital, subdivisional hospitals and health centres.

For this a total of $3.2m has been provided for the necessary planning, preparatory and maintenance works.

Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, last night while delivering the 2019/2020 National Budget in Parliament, said the notable projects would include: refurbishment of the emergency department at the CWM Hospital; refurbish Tamavua Twomey Hospital; refurbish Nabouwalu Subdivisional Hospital; upgrading of the Nausori Health Centre; and the maintenance of Vunisea Subdivisional Hospital.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the budget recognised that the dollar and cents of our nation’s economic output could not possibly capture all aspects of our people’s well-being.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete welcomed the budget last night.

Meanwhile, MOH in the 2019/2020 National Budget has been allocated a budget of $349.8m comprising $303.5m to cover operating costs, $34.7m for capital expenditures and a VAT of $11.5m.
