2019/2020 National Budget: Drop in ministerial budgets; Ministries to work smarter

THE drop in budget allocation for majority of the Government ministries does not mean that they will not perform to what they were doing, says Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
He said one would make a huge mistake if they assumed this.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said given the 2019/2020 National Budget, Government would now get ministries to work smarter.
He said it would now be “doing more with less”.
He said one of the major reductions for the Economy Ministry was the grant allocation to the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) and in other areas, he said, there have been other reductions because the rebuilding programs had been completed.
“So reductions have come down, some projects have come to an end,” he said.
“For example in this year’s budget, the 2019/2020 budget, for the Ministry of Health, there is an allocation for the completion of the Navosa Hospital.
“In the 2021 budget, it won’t be shown because it’s already been built.
“This is how some capital projects have been able to come off the dial, so we need to look at the budget from that perspective as opposed to say, we’ve got reductions or that means they won’t be able to do that.
“No, that’s not the case.”
