THIRTY-year-old Teakere Betero of Rabi Island was among the 11 men ordained to the deaconateĀ of the Catholic Church in Fiji by the Archbishop, Peter Loy Chong, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva today.

The Cathedral was packed to capacity as families of the newly-ordained deacons gathered to be part of the mass.

Mr Betero said it was humbling to be ordained as God’s servant and to serve the church.

“I was so emotional during the ordination because it’s been a challenging journey,” he said.

“After this, I am going to continue studies at the Pacific Regional Seminary before getting ordained as a priest and then I will be posted to Peru in South America for a mission.

“Walking with God is always challenging. I must say because first I will need to deal with my spiritual life so that I don’t stray and to be a role model for the people I will serve.”

Mr Betero thanked his mentors and family for their support.

Archbishop Loy Chong reminded the nearly-ordained deacons to serve with humility.

These 11 deacons would be ordained as priests later in the year.
